Scaling and root planing go beyond standard teeth cleaning done by a hygienist.

The procedure takes out all tartar, plaque, and bacteria both above and below the gum line.
Tartar or hardened plaque may be on your teeth above and below the gums. Scaling is when a dentist uses a tool to remove all the tartar and plaque buildup. They clean to the bottom of the pocket of space developing between the gums and teeth.
Pockets of space that develop mean gums are separated from teeth. Root planing smooths out teeth roots so the gums reattach to the teeth as they are supposed to, creating healthier gums and teeth.
Scaling and root planing don't hurt but can
leave that part of your mouth tender and
swollen afterward for a few days. You may
want to eat softer foods or take special care
while brushing.
